VC underscores imperative of entrepreneurship studies, as CE&GS holds advocacy day

 imperative of entrepreneurship studies

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu has said the Centre for Entrepreneurial and General Studies (CE&GS) would help instilled the skills of creativity and innovation in NOUN students

Adamu, represented by Prof. Abubakar G. Sulaiman, said the entrepreneurship study is a lifelong learning process that would help both the young and adult to develop their initiatives and be more creative and confident in whatever they do.

He made this statement this during an entrepreneurial advocacy organised by the centre to sensitise staff and students on its activities.

He explained that entrepreneurship education aids students from all socioeconomic background to think outside the box and nurture unconventional talents and skills.

The virtual advocacy event organised by CE&GS Abuja featured a virtual interactive meeting between the head office and its entrepreneurship incubation centres in the six geopolitical zones.

Head of the centre Dr. Juliet Inegbedion, said the centre was established to equip NOUN students with soft skills through its two mandatory entrepreneurship courses designed for all undergraduate students.

The centre, she said, coordinates all the general course in the university, among which is the general entrepreneurship course, which will bring out the innate abilities and creativity of students.

According to Inegbedion: “'this gives them the opportunity to apply their creativity and innovation to proper use. It would also help students develop new ideas, co-create and solve problems.

‘'Our advocacy is virtual because of the large number of students, who all cannot be in one location. A forum has been set up on the CE&GS website for comments and discussions among students in their various locations.'’

She said the entrepreneurial course would have students draw up business plans, carry out practicals on real products and services and come up with business prototypes among others.

She thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his unwavering support and appealed to the management to provide the centre with resources and equipment that would create an enabling environment for students to learn.

She also added that the centre has created six incubation centres across the six geo political zones for easy access by students.

Coordinator of the centre's virtual lab, Dr. Adewale Adeshina, said most of the activities and programs would be carried out online to enable students interact among themselves.

He said the website was still in its infant stage, “so lots of contents are still coming in.”

He said vital information such as the template for students' business plan and other useful information pertaining the centre would be put on the website.

“There are lots of forums on the website where students can interact with themselves, exchange information and learn together as a group. Student mentors would also be given opportunity to post information on the site,” the coordinator said.

The synchronised advocacy was held at the six geopolitical zones and Abuja, where the head of the duo of Dr Inegbideon and Adesina coordinated the proceedings.

At the Northwest centre, the event gathered directors of the study centres of the region at the Kano office of the university.

According to the CG&GS zonal coordinator, Mr. Sadik Mansur Murtala, the aim of the advocacy campaign was “to create awareness on what the centre is all about; its importance and benefits to the students and also to intimate the students on how to access the Entrepreneurship Incubation Centres at the various zones of the federation.”

The Maiduguri study centre hosted the advocacy for the northeast, with directors of all NOUN centres in region in attendance.
